The United States Department of Energy and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab estimate that the average family spends more than $ 2000 a year on their electricity bills, with at least half of those costs coming from heating or cooling the home. So it makes sense that a smart learning thermostat that can control home temperatures would be embraced by consumers. But the problem, say many experts, is that the programmable thermostats currently on the market are not user-friendly; as a consequence, homeowners get frustrated and don’t use them.

The Nest Learning Thermostat is designed to change that. The device learns a consumer’s behaviors, temperature preferences, and home environment, creating a unique heating and cooling program that keeps your family comfortable when they are home, and then reducing energy consumption when they are away. All of this is accomplished through automatic adjustments of the thermostat’s settings.

Co-founder and chief executive officer Tony Fadell calls the Nest the thermostat for the iPhone generation. “We hope it will not only save money and energy, but that it will teach and inspire people to think more about how they can reduce home-energy consumption.”

Programmable thermostats have been around since the 1970s and were marketed to homeowners as a way to reduce power use and save money.

But research found that nearly nine out of 10 consumers have never, or rarely, programmed theirs. In 2009 Energy Star revoked its certification of this type of thermostat because so few people were using them, meaning they never achieved proper functionality or had any significant impact upon energy usage.

The Nest’s features include the ability to learn a consumer’s schedule within about seven days, so it knows when to turn down—or up—the heat or air conditioning. The unit also shows consumers the most energy-efficient settings, and offers Wi-Fi connectivity so that the device can be controlled from a smart phone, laptop, or tablet. The Nest also boasts a modern and aesthetically-pleasing design.

The Nest is expected to be available by mid-November 2011, just in time to help lower winter heating bills.
